Downtown dinners: a foodie’s guide to downtown Winnipeg

There are a ton of amazing things about living and working downtown; we’re close to all of the Winnipeg Jets action, never have to fight for a parting spot at the Cenntennial Concert Hall (we just walk over), and we can run pretty much all of our errands without ever going outside (the skywalks are so fabulous). The best part though is the seemingly endless list of fabulous restaurants just steps from our door!

Our team has been going above and beyond, conducting some painstaking market research to find the best eats downtown. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Here’s a list of our top five favourite downtown dinner spots so far:

Peasant Cookery (100 – 283 Bannatyne Ave)oysters-1958668_640

Fact: It’s impossible to have a bad meal at Peasant Cookery. This Wow! Hospitality restaurant serves classic French comfort dishes with the chef’s signature twist. Their onion soup will bring tears to your eyes (it’s so good!) and they have the best charcuterie, and cheese selection in the province. We love the tourtiére, mussels and fries, and gnocchi. The absolute best though is their ‘buck a shuck’ oysters on Wednesday evenings. Bonus points if it’s a warm summer night and you score a spot on their patio looking over Old Market Square.

Deer + Almond (85 Princess Street)

This small and intimate gem in the West Exchange is the perfect gathering place for an intimate dinner full of friends and laughter. It’s warm interior is so cozy and comfortable that you’ll instantly feel relaxed and ready for a cocktail or glass of wine. Chef Mandel Hitzer knocks the menu out of the park with excellently executed home-style cooking that’s perfect for sharing (or keeping for yourself!). We highly recommend the fried brussel sprouts and beet and orange salad!

Hy’s Steakhouse (1 Lombard Avenue)

Stepping into Hy’s Steakhouse feels like stepping back in time. The interior is modern and beautiful but designed in a way that makes you feel instantly like Don Draper. There’s something about the lounge that just makes a person crave a martini or an old fashioned. It’s welcoming and comfortable and the stress will just melt away. If you can pull yourself away from the over stuffed chairs and cocktail tables in the lounge, the dining room won’t disappoint either. Hy’s makes a steak to die for! Add a side of their world famous cheese toast, or maybe a caeser salad (tossed right beside your table) and your taste buds will explode. A trip to Hy’s Steakhouse won’t be economical, but we guarantee it will be delicious!

Hermanos Restaurant & Wine Bar (179 Bannatyne Avenue)

While we’re talking steak, we have to mention Hermanos! The second you walk through the door you can feel the rich culture of the amazing South American countries that inspire their fabulous cuisine. Located in a historic brick building in the East Exchange, Hermanos oozes ambience and sets the mood for a succulent meal and fantastic drinks. While their specialty is steak and wine the menu goes well beyond with unique chicken, vegetarian, pasta, and seafood. Each dish is prepared with fresh ingredients that offer South American flavours. From tapas to steaks, drinks to dessert, Hermanos is a truly unique destination that will not disappoint.

Sydney’s at the Forks (215 – 1 Forks Market Road)

If you want cool and chic, head to Sydney’s at the forks. This premium-dining restaurant is located in the historic 100-year-old Grand Trunk Pacific Railway stable at The Forks. Their delicious ‘modern continental food’ involves thoughtful cooking using classic techniques, and is rooted in a commitment for using the best ingredients available. Their brilliant culinary team creates a seasonal three-course ‘Prix Fixe’ menu that will leave you stuffed to the brim but wishing you had more room! If the Crème Brûlée is on the menu you have to order it. Just trust us.

There’s a good thing that SkyCity has a gym because with all of the stunning culinary options within walking distance, our residents are going to have a few calories to sweat out!

Beat the winter blues with the ultimate Winnipeg ‘staycation’

It’s February, it’s chilly, and the winter blues have more than set in. We love Winnipeg all year round, but there’s something about the end of February that makes us crave a vacation from the daily grind. We thought about following the masses to Mexico, but instead realized that while a beach is gorgeous, there’s nothing cozier than the snow (it’s so pretty!). That’s why we decided to plan a good ‘ol fashioned staycation weekend right here in the ‘Peg.


Nothing says vacation (or stay-cation) like an amazing dinner complete with wonderful atmosphere
and a great wine list. To kick things off right we’re heading to Bailey’s on Lombard after work. Not much has changed in this place for the last decade or so, but that’s not a bad thing. Everything on the menu is to-die-for, and the wine and cocktail list will leave you thoroughly impressed. Plus the quick walk from SkyCity is gorgeous in the winter and almost as enjoyable as the dinner it’s self!


Brunch is the perfect way to start a day off, and Smith at the Inn at the Forks is our hands-down fave spot. Their menu is absolutely yummy, and their giant coffee mugs make waking up a breeze. Try the Red Flannel Hash or the Smith Eggs. Your taste buds will do a happy dance.

Post brunch we’ll spend the day wandering through The Forks. They have craft beer at The Common, as much history and learning as we can soak up at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, amazing food options, and fantastic shopping. Plus the outdoor skating trails, rinks, and river trail are one of the best parts about a Winnipeg winter.

Saturday night kicks off at Peasant Cookery (one of our faves). Not only do they have fab food but the wine list and cheese selection is nothing sort of epic. Plus, they’re close to the brand new location of the world famous Palamino Club, where we plan on dancing until they kick us out.


Sundays are for relaxation (and post “Pal” we need it). A day to decompress before the hustle and bustle of Monday sets in. We’re heading to the Fort Gary Hotel and zipping up to Ten Spa on the tenth floor. If you’ve never experienced their Hamam (a modern interpretation of a Turkish bath), you’re missing out. It’s a world-class way to say good-bye to stress and warm up in a cold Winnipeg winter. You’ll leave feeling amazing, without a care in the world.

The spa offers amazing treats prepared by the talented chefs at the Fort Garry Hotel. We’re lounging around post treatment for a Crème Brule, and a few glasses of wine (because that’s what you do on vacation). The service is fabulous, and the comfy waiting rooms are the perfect to relax.

Ten Spa also has change rooms that will blow your mind, with rainfall showerheads, a steam room, blow dryers and everything you’ll need for a post relaxation glam session. Take advantage and pop down to the Palm Lounge in the hotel for a final drink, some dinner, or just to have a cup of tea and listen to the amazing live music they often have. You’ll almost forget that Monday is right around the corner.
