Christmas is less than two weeks away and downtown has officially been transformed into a winter wonderland. The snow is finally here, all of the lights have been hung, and there’s a hustle and bustle that you only see around this time of year. Downtown is the perfect place to get a jump on your holiday shopping, and celebrate the season with the ones you love. By keeping to downtown you can avoid mall traffic, support some really great small businesses, eat some of the best food our city has to offer, and get a dose of the warm fuzzies you need this time of year

So where to shop? Where to eat? Downtown Winnipeg has an amazing offering of stores and restaurants all within walking distance of SkyCity, and our show room. We decided to do some very difficult footwork (just kidding – it was awesome), and uncover the best spots for you to celebrate the season and buy a special something for a special someone in your life!

“The Bay Downtown” as it’s more commonly known in the ‘peg was on our list last year, and it will be on all of the lists we make ever. We LOVE this building and love that it throws back to the original glory days of Winnipeg. It was built in a time where people wore hats and gloves to go shopping, and there’s something about the place that just feels glam. Maybe it’s the big doors, or the beautiful window displays, or maybe it’s the feeling you get sauntering down Portage Avenue with all of the Christmas lights lit up. Bottom line: it’s magical and you should go. Best things to buy: cosmetics, accessories, and the traditional Hudson’s Bay striped clothes and goodies.

Coal and Canary: Main Terminal Building, The Forks
If you haven’t experienced a Coal and Canary candle your life is seriously lacking. These beautiful locally made candles are hand-poured with a wood wick that adds a lovely crackling and popping sound. It’s like the most amazing smelling mini fireplace. Plus, with names like “All I want fir Xmas” (basically a sweet-smelling Christmas tree in wax form) these candles are the most fun ever. After having HUGE success selling at pop up shops and craft shows across the country, Coal and Canary has finally opened a permanent store and it’s 100% worthy the trip. They sell amazing bath products and other great gift ideas too. Best thing to buy: all the candles.

Ten Spa: 10th Floor, Fort Gary Hotel, 222 Broadway
There’s nothing more relaxing than a day at the spa, and as far as spas go Ten Spa is at the top of the game. Give the gift of relaxation with a gift certificate for a day of pampering, a manicure, or the Hamam (a Turkish bath ritual unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. If you want to help your special someone keep the spa experience going at home, Ten Spa also sells an assortment of decadent products that are guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling great! Best thing to buy: Hamam gift certificate (give the gift of heavenly relaxation!).


Little Brown Jug: 336 William Ave
Little Brown Jug is a super cool brewery located in the heart of the Exchange District. The building that houses this burgeoning small business was once the livery stables for the old city hall (how cool is that?). Its old-world charm is cozy and cool, and it makes for the perfect spot for enjoying a pint while watching the city hustle by and the snow fall. Plus, the beer is some if the best in the city and they sell growlers that would make a great gift for the craft beer lover on your list. Win-win!

Hy’s: 1 Lombard Avenue
Stepping into Hy’s Steakhouse feels like stepping back in time. The interior is modern and beautiful but designed in a way that makes you feel instantly like Don Draper. There’s something about the lounge that just makes a person crave a martini or an old fashioned. It’s welcoming and comfortable and the stress will just melt away. If you can pull yourself away from the overstuffed chairs and cocktail tables in the lounge, the dining room won’t disappoint either. Hy’s makes a steak to die for! Add a side of their world-famous cheese toast, or maybe a caeser salad (tossed right beside your table) and your taste buds will explode. A trip to Hy’s Steakhouse won’t be economical, but we guarantee it will be delicious!

If you want cool and chic, head to Sydney’s at the forks. This premium-dining restaurant is located in the historic 100-year-old Grand Trunk Pacific Railway stable at The Forks. Their delicious ‘modern continental food’ involves thoughtful cooking using classic techniques, and is rooted in a commitment for using the best ingredients available. Their brilliant culinary team creates a seasonal three-course ‘Prix Fixe’ menu that will leave you stuffed to the brim but wishing you had more room! If the Crème Brûlée is on the menu you have to order it. Just trust us.

Deadline Extended – St. Regis Mural Mixed Media Competition


Since launching our St. Regis preservation contest we’ve received a lot of feedback from the Winnipeg arts community. We’ve heard from people who believe that a cash prize should been included in the award that will be given to the winning applicant, and that it’s disrespectful and wrong that we weren’t offering one.

Upon further reflection we completely agree, and we apologize.

This contest was launched in the spirit of partnership! We wanted to work with Winnipeg, harnessing local talent to preserve a landmark hotel, a building that currently features beautiful piece of public art. We know that there is a lot of amateur talent in our beautiful city and wanted to give those individuals the opportunity to have some fun capturing a building that has meant a lot to Winnipeg city for so many years. No disrespect was intended, but we made a mistake and we apologize.

To show our respect to the amazing artists who will choose to apply, a cash prize of $700 will be presented to our winner, along with three additional prizes of $100 for our runners up.

Once more we would like to apologize for the over sight and thank the city of Winnipeg for their honestly in this situation and overall support for the SkyCity project!
We’ve extended the deadline for our St. Regis Hotel Mixed Media Competition! Entries must be received no later than 5:00 pm on September 30, 2017.

St. Regis MuralAre you an amateur painter, photographer, or budding artist? With demolition and redevelopment on the horizon, we’re looking for Winnipeg talent to preserve the beauty of the St. Regis Hotel for generations to come!

Fortress Real Developments Inc. and Edenshaw Developments invite citizens from across Winnipeg to enter the St. Regis Mural Mixed Media Competition, capturing the mural on the St. Regis Hotel through their lens and preserving it for the future. With plans in place to demolish and replace the St. Regis Hotel with a new parking structure with ground floor retail, we want to take this opportunity to highlight and feature what has been a historic feature in downtown Winnipeg for many years.

After all submissions are made, a judging event will be held in the fall where a panel of judges made up of local influencers and our development team will select one or more winners.

August in the City: what to do and where to eat!

We love downtown Winnipeg any time of the year, but the summer is particularly lovely. The warm weather seems to compel Winnipeggers out of their homes and offices whenever possible and the streets come alive with pedestrians, bicyclists, and tourists all exploring our beautiful city.

If you’re looking to try something new this August, we’ve compiled a list of awesome things to do downtown (that you probably didn’t know about) and of course a list of the best summer patios for you to enjoy before it’s too late (because you’re going to get hungry trying so many new things)!

Things to try:

  1. The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Canada Games Festival – This free festival runs until August 12 at The Forks, showcasing over 150 Canadian artists. The diverse, Canadian line-up includes headliners like Serena Ryder, Kardinal Offishall, Fred Penner and a performance by the Crash Test Dummies with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Make sure you stay for the fireworks at the end of each night’s concert!
  1. Movies on Memorial – Watch your favourite 90s movies under the stars for free in Memorial Park every Tuesday night in August! Pre-movie activities start at 7:00 pm, and the movie starts at sundown (approximately 9pm). Movies include The Little Rascals and Spice World.
  1. Splash and Dash Boat Tours – Take a scenic half-hour tour of Winnipeg’s waterways! Boats leave The Forks harbour every 15 minutes from 10:00 am to sunset, seven days a week and provide commentary and historical insights on many points of interest along the way. Tickets are available at the Splash Dash kiosk at The Forks dock.
  1. Free Skateboard Lessons – Feeling adventurous on your vacay? Until August 18, the Winnipeg Skateboarding Outreach Organization, in conjunction with Sk8 Skates, will be hosting free skateboard lessons for beginners at the Plaza at the Forks Skatepark. The lessons will run every day from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Skateboards will be available for use (free!) but it’s mandatory that participants BYO helmet.
  1. Folklorama – Folklorama is the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world. Pavilions feature lively entertainment, cultural displays, warm hospitality and authentic ethnic cuisine. This year you can take in five Pavilions at RBC Convention Centre. August 6-12: Cuban, Polish, and First Nations Pavilions. August 13-19: Brazilian and Mexican Pavilions.

Best downtown patios:

  1. Tavern United (MTS Centre) – This rooftop patio offers some of the sunniest dining downtown, with a fun, pub style menu. Head here for uncomplicated drinks, an amazing tan, and a fun meal in the heart of downtown.alcohol-bar-drinks-party
  1. Earls Main – Earls on Main Street has managed to establish it’s self as the go-to after work hangout in downtown. The food is consistently good, the drinks are yummy, and the heaters and complimentary blankets make the outdoor experience a fun one even late into the summer.
  1. Era Restaurant at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights – Located in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (one of the world’s most architecturally progressive buildings) ERA is Winnipeg’s gathering place for good food, sharing and reflection. It’s beautiful patio is so peaceful and calm you’ll forget you’re in the center of the city. .
  1. The Baja Beach Club – Located at The Forks, on the banks of the Assiniboine, the Baja Beach club is a must go downtown vacation destination. Great tunes, cold cockails, and amazing water views will make you forget you’re in Winnipeg and give you flashbacks to from last tropical getaway.
  1. La Roca – Nothing says summer like a refreshing margarita, and La Roca delivers those every time! This spacious patio is beautiful and the drinks cold and delicious. Plus Tacos are never a bad idea.

Cheers to the future and another 150 years of beautiful Winnipeg!

Canada’s 150th birthday has riwinnipeg_Cropghtfully brought up a lot of discussion about the history of our great country. While we celebrated with our friends and families at The Forks this past weekend, we started thinking about Winnipeg, the important role it has played in the development of our nation, and the beautiful reminders that history has left behind within our gorgeous city.

Incorporated in 1873 (six years after confederation), Winnipeg has a very important place in Canadian history. In the late 1800’s it was a railroad boomtown and soon became the commercial center of the Prairie Provinces. In the heart of our great city lies the Exchange District, a vibrant neighbourhood that derives it’s modern name from it’s historic one: the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Where we now have bustling cafes and condominiums once stood the former centre of the grain industry in Canada, as well as the location of other commodity exchanges which developed in Winnipeg between 1881–1918.

At this point in history (about 20 years after confederation) Winnipeg was one of the fastest growing cities in North America! It became known as the Chicago of the North, with much of it’s remaining architecture in that period heavily influenced by the Chicago style. In fact even today, boarding one of Chicago’s famed river tours to look at buildings built in the early 20th century will make you feel like you’re back home in the ‘Peg!

Though the great depression and some economic hardships in the late 21st century may have caused people to temporarily leave downtown, we’re in the middle of a downtown renaissance. Though reminders of our great past still stand strong in our city (The Exchange District, The Hudson’s Bay building, the hundred year old homes that line so many of our streets) we have added stunning modernity to our city. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the repurposing of what is now The Forks Market, and the world-class Bell MTS Place are all examples of the new and exciting development in our great city.

To us, SkyCity represents a large piece in the revitalization of downtown Winnipeg, and the return of our city to its former glory. With 380 residential units, SkyCity will bring hundreds of people to downtown, increasing pedestrian traffic, retail and restaurant revenues, and encourage businesses to reinvest in our downtown. SkyCity is good for your health!

A few weeks ago we read an article in the Globe and Mail that said walking is directly linked to increased brain function and an overall healthy lifestyle. This really got us thinking about how pedestrian friendly life in SkyCity will be! Of course if our residents need parking, parking spots are available, but living downtown we hope that most of them will choose to ditch the cars and get moving.winnipeg_Crop

With a little research we’ve uncovered just how good for your health walking can be. For the average person, walking 10,000 steps means an extra 400 – 500 calories burned in a day. That means weight loss of about a pound a week if you maintain the same eating habits. The American Heart Association notes that a brisk walk can lower risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes if performed and maintained over time. Walking (and all physical activity) is also known to drastically reduce stress levels through the natural release of endorphins!

So just how pedestrian friendly will SkyCity Be? Very! This iconic building will be located in the heart of downtown, walking distance to shops, restaurants, entertainment, and pretty much everything you’ll ever need.
